Hey all! I will working as an RSO at the Myakka City Feb 12-13.
For those of you not familiar with the Appleseed program, it is a civilian marksmanship training program. It costs 70 bucks + range fees for two full days of instruction and practice. Women, under-21 (under 18 must have an adult to supervise) and active military members are free.
Here is what they teach:
SAFETY!
How to shoot "by the numbers" (steps to a successful shot placement)
Ballistics and Battle Sight Zero
Proper shooting positions and sling use
Safe transitioning from position to position
Proper trigger control and pull
How to acquire a natural point of aim
Shot group analysis and error correction
proper use of "Ball and Dummy" drills
The history of the American Revolution and why we should wake up everyday grateful to those who gave us this great land.
Their overall goal is to get you to the point where you can shoot the "rifleman's quarter mile" and can hit a man-sized target using a rack-grade rifle with surplus ammo and iron sights at 500 yards.
The courses are physically challenging and will require you to perform timed shot strings while transitioning from one position to another and performing combat mag changes in the process.
They use the Army Qualification Test as their training benchmark, you will do ten or more over the course of two days.
If you show up and you don't know how to shoot, then you will when you leave.
If you already know how to shoot, then it's a great opportunity to work with others who are dedicated to improving their shooting skills to spot the holes in your game and tighten up your shot groups.
If you are already the best damned shot in the world then it will give you the opportunity to mentor others who aspire to your skill level.
I have been through four of these now and I can consistently shoot "expert" scoring 210 or higher out of 250 points. It has been well worth the efforts and I am now training to become an instructor.
