Meh, don't get me wrong here, but honestly, I never thought of cheerleading as a sport.

Competitive, it can be, and those cheerleaders can get hurt just as bad as someone playing sports.

Lord knows I laugh when people talk about soccer being a sport. When I was a kid the only kids that played it were the ones that could not play baseball, football and other sports. But meh, some consider it a sport..

Anyways back to cheerleading, there are not leagues, they have competitions, and all young guys and pervs watch them, but honestly they don't have weekly games, nor would there be a big fan following, unless you consider the pervs and young guys a fan following! LOL

Is the judge right? Meh all in the eyes of the beholder I guess. I don't consider cheerleading a sport, someone here might, and if they want to, I'll back them, just as I hope they'll back me saying it isn't.

Is Title IX right? That is an easier question, no, it isn't, but in some cases I have seen where without Title IX some girl teams would not exist, but I have seen it abused where people sued schools over it, to only see the teams they wanted only a year later didn't have support nor players to fill a team.

Default If the score is all subjective it isn't a sport.

Autoracing, who is leading the last lap wins, not subjective.
Football, however had the most points when time runs out wins, not subjective.

Ice Dancing? Cheer leading? They aren't sports. Ballet isn't a sport either, but I would bet that the athleticism of a ballet dancer is as high if not higher than most baseball players.

I've done all three and figure skating is most definitely sport. The amount of control you need to jump and twirl is ridiculous, it requires a lot of athleticism. I admire people who have the ability to do such a thing, they spend more time off the ice working out and "training" than you think.

As for competitive cheer leading, that was the thing to do at my high school. I watched my best friend preform with Miami Elite and she traveled all over the country. The amount of training the girls and guys go through to do the stunts is insane. This however, is hard to see as a "sport" because the way they judge competitions is odd. But the amount of physical strength it takes to be a competitive cheer leader should not be ignored. For the sake of college sports though, I think it should be considered.

Ballet should never be considered a sport, it is an art. I pursued a dance career in high school, and had my knees not developed a severe case of tendinitis, I would have been dancing with Ballet Hispanico in NYC. "Dance" competitions should not be confused with ballet though, that is a completely different style of dance. The girls that do the regular dance competitions are nothing short of idiotic, there is no "sport" in it, just stretching as hard as you can before you go on stage so your leg goes higher. No grace, poise or control necessary.

I've been in ballet classes where football players have come in to improve their movement and try to lower their chances of injury. Always fun to watch big sweaty men try to plie in first position

Was a joke I will say I don't like Soccer, and rugby I watched while in Europe and South africa, not much of a fan there either, but, I won't tell others they can't watch it and call it a sport.

Doesn't mean I can't make fun of them either!

I'd say marching band qualifies more as a sport than cheerleading does.

There are governing organizations, regular practices and competitions, coaches, and a defined season, but I've never heard anyone argue that it should be considered a sport.

Just because something requires lots of athleticism, skill, time and effort, doesn't mean it should qualify a sport.

For me a sport must have competitors, points(no judges) and a following. It could be a beer pong league as long as it meets the above criteria. My only exception to the rule so far is boxing and UFC. and even then if it goes to the judges its iffy.

I read an article in maxim recently where the editor did 4 weeks of UFC training and 4 weeks of ballet and swore ballet was a tougher workout and harder on his body.
